To understand and appreciate the architecture of any country it is as well to recall the conditions - historical, social, political, geological and climatic - under which is was evolved, these bring important factors in the development of any architecture. I have, therefore, endeavoured in this outline to trace, as briefly as possible, the conditions which influenced the develpoment of architecture at the Cape in the eighteenth century.
