Great African Mysteries was first published in 1953, his second book to be published in Britain. The demand for his early works has been so great that it was decided to make his early works available once more for his multitude of readers.
Lawrence Green always had an outstanding press overseas as well as in South Africa and as The Times Literary Supplement said: "That tireless traveler lends enchantment to many a northern escapologist's winter of discontent... and yet this is not merely a surface and sentimental portrait of the world's least trampled parts. It is rather reminiscent of one of those quiet provincial museums where the noise of traffic dies suddenly away and one finds oneself face to face with the longer vista of a man's development, his adaptability, and stretching further back with the dilemmas of evolution."
