For more than a quarter century SWAPO - the South West African People's Organisation of soon-to-be-independent Namibia - has been a political and military reality throughout much of Southern Africa. Thousands of lives have been lost in a guerrilla war that has never been adequately covered by the media. Few people - in Africa or elsewhere - are aware of the make-up of SWAPO as a political organisation; of the reason why the movement ultimately resorted to violence as a means of achieving change; or of the panoply of characters involved during the past three decades.
