Haunted by the disappearance of her twin brother Daniel during a government crackdown in Hong Kong and by the breakdown of her marriage, Anna returns to Sydney. When she begins a photographic study of fossilised shells, she encounters Seth Lamarque, a blind palaeontologist who is convinced that he can discern patterns within the ebb and flow of life through the aeons.
Through Seth, she also meets her sister Rachael, a lawyer working with the homeless. Their lives intertwine in ways none of them could have predicted, changing them forever.
